We’re very excited to share an update on the Military English team’s latest project: Engage, a brand new series of ESP–Military English textbooks!
The Engage series is designed to work alongside your General English program by extending learners’ exposure to military focused vocabulary. In this series, we concentrate on building the language, knowledge and critical thinking needed in real-world military contexts. For instance, it explores language and ideas about going on combined training exercises, deploying on peacekeeping operations, improving communication across ASEAN and the Pacific, and studying in Australia.
There is ample active practice of the new vocabulary, with a major focus on reading, listening and speaking tasks (with some writing practice, too) and a recycling of grammar that you may have taught in your General English lessons. The topics in Engage have been developed with the wider Indo-Pacific region in mind, ensuring that the scenarios, tasks, and language reflect the environments and operations relevant to our partner nations.
We are currently developing the Elementary level (CEFR A1 / ADFELPS 3) package, which includes:
Twelve units covering a wide range of army, navy, and air force topics making this resource ideal to teach in tandem with a General English Program textbook and other materials from the Military English website that address your students' specific learning needs .
Alongside writing the material, participating partner schools have been actively trialling units. We have been refining the contents based on this valuable feedback. This iterative approach is helping us ensure that the content is practical, accessible, and effective for learners across diverse contexts.
A huge thank you to our partners in Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam and Laos for taking the time to trial early versions of the material and share their insights. Your contributions are very appreciated and are directly shaping the quality and direction of the series.
We aim to have the first Engage Elementary book published in the second half of 2026, and we’re looking forward to sharing more updates as we progress. Get in touch on ditc.militaryenglish@defence.gov.au if you or your centre would like to hear more.
