Military English
Welcome to DITC’s Military English teaching resources. These resources focus on teaching vocabulary from a wide variety of military topics.
These resources will help learners get ready for ADFELPS, and for international missions or combined exercises where English is used.
The resources are in three formats:
- Reading Lesson – students read a text with a focus on Military English vocabulary. They then practise the vocabulary in a writing and speaking context.
- Listening Lesson – students listen to a text with a focus on Military English vocabulary. They then practise the vocabulary in a writing and speaking context.
- Vocabulary Builder – students match new vocabulary to images, then practise the vocabulary.
All resources have a students’ copy and a teacher’s copy available for download. There are also recordings of the listening audio, and audio recordings for pronunciation practice.
The resources target English language levels from ADFELPS 4 / CEFR A2 to ADFELPS 6 / CEFR B2. We are working to display the levels on the Teacher’s copy and the webpages of every lesson.
We are adding more resources all the time so expect to see more and more materials with an assigned level. Let us know at ditc.militaryenglish@defence.gov.au if you have a question or a suggestion about Military English.
We hope you and your students enjoy using these materials.
Announcements - February, 2026.
We have new materials published! Check details below.
- Lesson - What's in my Ratpack? [listening]
- Vocabulary Builder - Parts of a Ratpack (this and the Ratpack lesson above are linked. We recommend teaching this Vocab Builder first, so Ss can get the most out of the two materials)
- Vocabulary Builder - Parts of a Pistol (this material recycles vocabulary from Vocabulary Builder - Parts of an Assault Rifle. Teaching both materials ensures your Ss consolidate this vocab)
- Vocabulary Builder - Parts of an Aircraft Movement Area
- We've also updated Lesson - Snapshot of the Navy [reading]. It is now aligned with the latest generation of materials.
>>> Check out the progress we're making on Engage - Military English Course Textbook here. <<<
If you missed last month's announcements, these are the new materials we published in January:
- Lesson - Explosive Ordnance Disposal - Making UXOs and Communities Safe [listening]
- Lesson - A Job in the Air Force - Loadmaster [reading]
- Lesson - Combined Air Force Exercises - Exercise Elangaroo [reading]
- Listening Lesson - Radio Communications (RATEL) - Radio Checks (this material recycles vocab from Lesson - Radio Communications (RATEL) [listening]
These materials were updated, also in January:
- Lesson - Patrol Boats [reading] (we recommend teaching Vocabulary Builder - Parts of a Patrol Boat before this lesson)
- Lesson - Marksmanship Principles [reading]
We hope you have as much fun teaching these materials as we did writing them.
Please do check them out and, as always, we welcome your feedback.
