Update your Teaching Skills
Welcome to DITC’s Military English teacher training module.
Hello teachers!
In this module, you’ll watch three different videos of Military English lessons at DITC, taught by three different teachers. These videos will help you review effective teaching techniques that are covered in MELT. You'll also see our Military English materials used in a real classroom here at DITC.
Some teachers may not feel confident teaching Military English because they are not experts in the topic. Remember—you are the expert in teaching and training. You don’t need deep military knowledge to run a good lesson. You can prepare by reading the lesson notes on the teacher’ version, reading up on the topic on the internet, and doing all the prep you would normally do before you teach something new. Another important point is that you can also rely on your students. Let them share their knowledge— a great way to promote a more learner-centred environment!
Each video takes about 30–40 minutes to complete. They don’t need to be watched in order. We recommend watching a whole video in one session. You can pause, but if you leave it paused for a long time e.g. overnight, it may reset and you’ll need to restart.
This is not a test! Think of it as a refresher on teaching techniques, and a chance to see how Military English lessons are delivered at DITC. You may also wish to compare, discuss, and reflect with your colleagues.
Enjoy, and if you have any feedback or questions, please don’t wait, let us know by contacting us at ditc.militaryenglish@defence.gov.au.
